Puerto Rico Family Vacations

If you’re wondering is Anguilla safe then the answer is yes, it’s one of the safest places in the Caribbean. Like many of its neighboring islands, Anguilla has experienced a growth spurt over the past few decades as evidenced by the rise of swanky hotels and upscale villa resorts. And while this British Overseas Territory relies on its luxury tourism it hasn’t lost any of its laid-back charm.
Visit preforming arts venues such as José Miguel Agrelot Coliseum, the largest stage entertainment building the island, housing a range of performances from drama to comedy. See the fantastic Teatro Tapia, one of the oldest American theaters still in use, and a true Puerto Rican cultural experience. You can expect to be picked up in San Juan before 8 a.m., and return around dinner time. I think this is a must-do in Puerto Rico, though, as the ocean around the island is so beautiful. A lot of people visit San Juan every year – but that's because the city is a popular joining point for Caribbean cruises.



There are direct flights from more than ten major US cities as well as access from many European cities such as Frankfurt, London and Madrid. Puerto Rico is also really well linked to all the other surrounding Caribbean islands making it a perfect destination to enjoy a multi centred holiday. If you are travelling from the United States, Puerto Rico has the significant advantage of no passport requirement.
Perks include a free buffet breakfast, a swimming pool and hot tub, a casual restaurant serving very good burgers, and a gym. If you have an early morning or late night flight to catch, this Courtyard by Marriott property is a good choice, as it is quite near the airport. That said, it gets some air traffic noise complaints as well. Still, it sits on one of the top beaches in San Juan, Isla Verde, and you can relax in hammocks strung between palm trees here. When it comes to dining, the resort has two restaurants and offers all-inclusive packages, which are a good choice if you're staying more than a night or two, as dining off the property is limited.

Many other cities and towns in Puerto Rico, such as Caguas and Ponce, also start partying when the sun sets, so there are always nightlife opportunities no matter where you are. You can choose a lovely beach house, a stylish condo or a charming villa. The peak tourist season is between December and April, but this has more to do with the climate in U.S. mainland than anything else. Gilligan’s Island is one of the lesser-known islands of Puerto Rico. It’s located off the coast of Guanica, a more popular beach destination, and it’s quite small. The Sheraton Puerto Rico Hotel and Casino in the Convention Center District offers gorgeous views of the San Juan Bay and is just minutes from historic Old San Juan and numerous beaches. Every room and suite has a 40-inch flat panel TV, an iPod entertainment system, an iron, a well-lit and spacious desk, a Sheraton Sweet Sleeper bed, and wireless access. This resort has an outdoor pool, a spa, a whirlpool, a water slide, an arcade room, and a state-of-the-art wellness center. The 14,000 square foot casino with full service is also a major attraction.
There are other things to consider too, like whether or not your resort is gated, whether the beaches are child-friendly, and what kinds of activities are on offer. For instance, St. Luciahas a low rate of crime, but if you’re planning on hiking through the forest and climbing the Pitons it may be better to leave the kids at home. Bad weather in the Caribbean is typically confined to hurricane season which lasts from June to November. But the risk of storms generally peaks in an even smaller window, roughly from August through October.

If you do go, it’s a good idea to make sure your flight and Puerto Rico all-inclusive resort stay are refundable. It’s also wise to consider travel insurance and plan for the possibility of inclement weather. Ponce, Puerto Rico's second-largest city, is packed with incredible things to do—which makes it a pretty stellar place to stay.
Plaza del Mercado is a market square that sells produce during the day and is a gathering place for locals on weekend nights. Grab a glass of homemade sangria and take it to an outdoor table to listen to live music from the neighborhood bars and mingle with other travelers and locals. In December 2015 we hired a local guide and had a great adventure. He did the driving, arranged for meals, and had excellent places for us to stay as we moved around the island. So glad we got out of San Juan and got to see so much more of the island.
